Woodpeckers of the world of the World
Woodpeckers have a wide distribution. I have photographed them in UK and Europe including Hungary and Finland. They also occur in the Americas including Florida, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Brazil. The majority are colourful and have mixtures of red, white and black. Notables are the White Woodpecker in Brazil and Black Woodpecker in Europe. They mainly feed on insects found on trees and often communicate by drumming with their bill. They mostly nest and roost in holes in trees which they have excavated. Woodpeckers have strong bills which are used for drilling and long sticky tongues for extracting food.
Woodpeckers are best photographed at or near a nest hole, but some species can be attracted to fruit.
